RARE AND IMPORTANT BALEEN SCRIMSHAW WHALING SCENE. Circa 1843. This rare example of scrimshawed baleen depicting an American whale hunt inscribed with the title in script: “A Right Whaling Scene off the N.W. Coast of America”. The scene shows three dories approaching a breeched right whale, harpoons at the ready, the attending whaling ship to the right of the scene. The account of the event within a leafy border incised near the tip of the baleen fragment and reads as follows in precise script: “The whale from which this is a part captured June 15th 1843 by the ship “South Carolina” of New Bedford, Capt. A. N. Stewart in the North Pacific Ocean in lat. 55.36 N, and long. 156. W”. SIZE: 31″ l. PROVENANCE: From a local museum, China, Maine. CONDITION: Scrimshaw in remarkably good clear condition of fine quality. Surface of baleen in need of cleaning. Inactive insect damage around perimeter. Two old adhesive identification labels on surface. Very good overall. 9-93887 (1,500-2,000)
