CARVED TEAK EAGLE PLAQUE WITH PORTRAIT OF CAPTAIN ISAAC HULL. Isaac Hull was the captain of the U.S.S. Constitution. First quarter 19th Century. The triple arch crest capped with a conforming brass band, above a circular painted portrait of Isaac Hull in uniform, a flag on one side and a depiction of the Constitution on the other, within a conforming brass band, beneath a furling carved banner flanked by carved displayed eagles, each with a yellow glass eye. Now mounted for hanging. The initials “I H” are painted at the base of the portrait. SIZE: 15″ h x 36″ w. PROVENANCE: Hung in the dining hall of a sailor’s home in Boston as early as 1880 and acquired by Robert Oliver; Boston Naval architect. Possibly the plaque presented to Isaac Hull by craftsmen at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during his command circa 1815. CONDITION: All original, with remnants of old blue paint on back of board, the board notched at the ends in a manner suggesting that this was originally designed as the crest for either a piece of case furniture, or perhaps part of a door frame, on board ship. 9-93230 (8,000-12,000)
