JOHN SAWIN PRESENTATION BANJO TIMEPIECE. Mid 19th century. Of typical form, the mahogany case with circular enameled dial with a Roman numeral chapter ring and time aperture. The name “Sawin” painted on the dial above the numeral 6. The gilded throat mounted with the original eglomise panel of scrolling gilt feathers on a white ground flanked by cast brass filets. The box case with gilt molded trim centering a white eglomise panel painted with a blue and red cartouche with gilt C-scrolls above the fluted pendant apron mounted with acorn finials. The brass movement engraved “G. F. Stevenson”. Clock retains original brass pendulum and lead weight. SIZE: 34″. CONDITION: The example, the case in nearly “as found” condition, retaining original surfaces, gilding and eglomise panels. Eagle finial absent, the dial with considerable paint loss between the numerals 11 and 5. The eglomise throat panel with two breaks at left and right bottom corners. The base door missing a block, the eglomise panel with extensive scratches. The gilding overall is very dry and in need of restoration. 9-97877 (2,000-4,000)
