RARE GENUINE COLT BUNTLINE SPECIAL WITH AN ORIGINAL SKELETON STOCK. SN 28810. Cal. 45 Colt. A true Buntline Special with 10″ bbl, tall dovetail front sight with patridge blade insert and 1-line block letter address. Flat top-strap has a milled slot equipped with the special Buntline leaf sight. Left side of frame has 2-line patent dates and the hammer screw has an extended head and tip to accommodate the skeleton steel stock. Caliber is marked on left shoulder of trigger guard. SN was observed on bottom of frame & trigger guard and the last four digits of SN are on bottom of bbl under ejector rod housing & outer diameter of cylinder. Ejector rod housing is third type with bull’s eye ejector rod head. Mounted with very old, probably orig 1-pc ivory grip made in the orig way with two slabs of ivory attached to two slabs of wood that are attached together making one solid piece. Accompanied by an orig Colt steel skeleton stock. While Colt offered and produced single actions in bbl lengths 2-1/2″ to 16″ and the modern jargon for bbl lengths longer than the standard 7-1/2″ has evolved to become “Buntline Specials.” The only true Buntline Specials are found in the serial range 28,800 thru 28,830 and range in bbl length 10″ to 16″ with the special flat top frame milled for the special Buntline leaf sight and the extended hammer screw for stock attachment. Accompanied by a packet of information illuminating the Buntline Specials including a Colt Factory letter stating bbl length as 10″ with Globe & Peep Sight special features and shipped to C.G. Wingard, May 20, 1878. Also included is an 8 page letter and associated material from R.L. Wilson describing the gun and its history in great detail and providing additional information on long barreled Colts. Only 3 genuine revolvers w/ 10″ bbls are known today. SIZE: On Exhibition at Cody Firearms Museum 1974-1998. CONDITION: Fair. No orig finish remains, being an overall cleaned gray metal patina with scattered pitting and a few light dings. The tall patridge front sight is a working replacement. SN on back strap is obliterated. Hammer screw & several of the other screws appear to be replacements as are the hammer spring & screw. Grip has a chipped left toe and rounded right toe with myriad dark age lines and some minor oil staining and retains a fine ivory patina. Hammer is not solid in safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine, worn dark bore. Stock is sound with a cleaned gray metal patina. 4-39853 (25,000-35,000)
