EXTREMELY RARE 1812 STEPHEN DECATUR U.S.S. UNITED STATES VS HMS MACEDONIAN SILVER MEDAL. Julian NA-9. This outstanding early silver medal is exceedingly rare, only a few were made and only a handful are known to exist; most of those are in institutions. Remarkably there are two in this auction. Both have descended through different branches of the Lear-Decatur family. Two in the same auction normally would leave a contrary impression of less than rare however this is an exceedingly unusual circumstance having both come from the same family, via different branches. An extraordinary opportunity. This exceedingly rare silver War of 1812 medal were generally understand to have been presented to the officers involved in named action. SIZE: This exceedingly rare example measures approx. 6-1/2 cm diameter. CONDITION: Very nice. Nicely old toned color with scattered small dings or scratches. The border with some small dents; one which appears at about 9:30, one at about 4:00 and a teeny ding on the edge at about 11:00. The reverse exhibits the small 1″ fracture that supposedly exists in all the originals. This surface fracture begins just inside the rim edge and travels up into the water of the battle scene. Detail is still generally strong and good however, high points do show wear. A wonderful discovery and most importantly descending directly from the exact family responsible for the original production of the coin; the Stephen Decatur family. 9-98728 (20,000-30,000)
