IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN SILVER TWO HANDLE LOVING CUP. Circa 1822, John Jones (1809-1822), Boston, Massachusetts. The bell shaped body with opposing S-scrolled handles joined to a pedestal base with a circular stepped foot. The interior underside of the base with hallmarks struck twice “J JONES” within a rectangular cartouche. The loving cup inscribed “The Gift/ of Joseph Lawrance Esq/ To the first Church/ of Christ/ In Woburn 1822“. Weight: 14.7 troy ounces. SIZE: 7-1/3″ H. Interior diameter of opening is 4-7/8”. PROVENANCE: Property of First Church, Congregational, Woburn, Massachusetts. Reference: On loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts circa 1910 for the exhibition of 1911. L-R 15.10 CONDITION: Two horizontal creases to right of inscription at lower portion of handle. Additional deeper crease with dent slightly above pedestal at base of cup. Otherwise small shallow creases and dents overall. Minimal scratching. The interior of cup has pressure lines where the bottom of each handle is attached to the cup. This appears to be stress related as opposed to any form of repair or restoration. Otherwise generally good. 7-74025 (800-1,200)
