LOUIS DODD (United Kingdom, 1943-2006) “THE RIVER THAMES AT GREENWICH SHOWING THE AMERICAN FRIGATE ST. LAWRENCE BRINGING EXHIBITS FOR LONDON’S GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851”. Outstanding oil on panel shows a broadside view looking across the river at the Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich and beyond is seen Queen’s House, The Royal Observatory, through which the Greenwich Mean Time line passes. The central three-mast ship having partial sails and several crew members with guns at the ready. Flying American flag at stern. Several other ships are seen including a steam sailor sailing right to left in foreground. All under a blue & white cloud sky. Signed lower right. Housed in its original decorative partial gilt frame which has the title legend at bottom. NOTE: In addition there is a framed painting of a British ship which shows the painting technique through eight stages of Louis Dodd. Also accompanying the lot is the book “The Confederate Raiders” by Thomas J. Coughlin illustrated by Louis Dodd. Four of his works can be found in the boardroom of Federal Express and General Motors has two. He was sold and represented by the finest marine arts galleries in the country.
