GEORGE INNESS (American, 1825-1894) “THE VILLA BORGHESE, ROME, 1871”. Outstanding large oil on canvas Italian scene shows a park outside the Villa Borghese depicting over 40 figures in colorful dress. The women carrying parasol, some seated under the canopy of tall trees. All under a blue and white cloud sky. The foreground grass lawn leading to a series of long white marble steps to an area of grass and trees. The twin towers of the Villa are seen in the background. Signed lower left “G Inness, Rome, 1871”. Housed in what appears to be its magnificent original frame with brass artist plaque. REFERENCE: Illustrated in “The Works of George Inness An Illustrated Catalog Raisonne by Leroy Ireland, 1965″. Illustrated on page 130, No. 539. Also, according to an email from Michael Quick, this example is no. 391, vol. 1, pp. 376-377, repro. p. 377, in George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonné. SIZE: 20″ x 30”.
