FINE AND RARE EARLY AMERICAN SILVER BEAKER. Circa 1740, Jacob Hurd (1702/3-1758), Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1740. Of cylindrical form with flaring rim and molded stepped foot rim. Beneath the top rim on the side is the hallmark “IHuRD” in a shaped punch. The side engraved The Gift of/ N-Saltonstall and R-Cotton/ to the first Church of Christ in/ Wobourn. Weight: 6.8 troy ounces. SIZE: 5-1/4″ H. PROVENANCE: Property of First Church, Congregational, Woburn, Massachusetts. Reference: On loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts circa 1910 for the exhibition of 1911. See “American church silver of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries” compiled by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, item number 615, p.73, and illustrated front row, third from left. CONDITION: The beaker with light surface scratching shallow creases, dimples, and with light denting all commensurate with age. Foot rim slightly misshapen. Otherwise very good.
