TWO SAILOR MADE WHALE BONE AND IVORY WALKING STICKS. Second half 19th century. American. First example octagonal tapered whale bone shaft, head by triangular mother of pearl inlays joined to baleen spacer terminating in whale tooth ivory grip. Second, with whale bone grip fashioned in the form of a sperm whale joined to copper spacer, joined to a wooden shaft. SIZE: First: 32-1/2″ l. Second: 36-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Generally good, ivory handle with old cracking. 9-24649 (500-700)
