RARE AND UNIQUE SCRIMSHAW AUTOPSY CARVED CASE. Circa 1864. The cylindrical case in two parts, each turned end with 8 small holes. The double sided scrimshaw image depicting the body Col. Potter, with his chest and abdomen open for examination, depicted with a bullet hole in his right thigh, and missing his left foot. His right foot with toe tag. The opposing side scrimshawed with the text “THE AUTOPSEY OF COL. E POTTER BY DR. SOLOMON BALTIMORE APRIL 13, 1864”. The case currently contains 5 sewing implements. SIZE: 6-3/4″ l x 1-1/8″ dia. CONDITION: With good patina and surfaces. Minor age and shrinkage cracks. Overall very good. 9-20542 (2,000-4,000)
