IMPORTANT GODDESS OF LIBERTY COPPER WEATHERVANE. Second half 19th century, American. Attributed to Cushing and White and based on a design by A.L. Jewell, Waltham, MA. Modeled with an American flag with pierced stars, bonnet with laurel wreath, sash embroidered with 5-points stars, blouse cinched at the waist, joined to a copper hexagonal plinth above a copper ball with medial rib. Rod mounted with scrolled cast brass directionals with oxidized green patina, further mounted to a faceted octagonal flared copper spire with patinated green surfaces. Weathervane exhibits worn gilded surface with verdigris. Note: nearly identical Cushing & White labeled example sold at Sotheby’s New York, May 19th, 2005, lot 114. Another similar example to be found in the Shelburne Museum. Another similar example in A Gallery of American Weathervanes and Whirligigs by Robert Bishop and Patricia Coblentz, figure 70, page 48. SIZE: Weathervane: 20-3/4″ h. Overall including plinth: 69-1/4″ h. PROVENANCE: From a private Maine collection. CONDITION: Very good overall with old surfaces.
