EXCEPTIONAL HARDWOOD INLAID JEWELRY BOX. Second half 19th century. American. Rectangular box of with burled circassian walnut veneer, each panel divided by geometric figured string inlays. Hinged lid fitted with three tombstone arches with carved ivory mounts including keystones. Each arch fitted with mirror plate. Within the box is fitted three trays. Top tray with arrangement of square lidded compartments each lid with checkerboard inlay and turned ivory handles, center-most rear compartment fitted with 6 ivory spools each divided into three sections. Front pullout section additionally fitted with single secret drawers. Central tray with parquetry inlaid lids to all compartments, many compartments with removable trays and secret drawers. All lids with turned knobs of ivory. Bottom tray is fixed to the box, central four boxes each with burled and inlaid cross, each arm of which conceals secret drawer. Box is fabricated from several hardwood species including cherry, yew, walnut, mahogany, tulip wood etc. Truly a unique example combining the best elements of American Folk Art with accomplishments of master craftsman.
