RARE LARGE DOG’S HEAD REMINGTON CANE GUN. SN 97. Cal. 32 RF. Fine cane gun about 36-3/4″ long with chocolate brown gutta percha covering and a molded large gutta percha dog’s head as a handle. It has a tapered steel tip and a 1-1/8″ wide unmarked silver band at the joint with concealed button trigger that has four concentric rings. The joint where the handle is attached to the shank has a major repair consisting of a 1-3/8″ silver collar which appears to be over a brass collar and is pinned in place with silver brads. SN was observed on the shaft just below the loading joint. Cane guns were produced by Remington for only a short period, 1866-1888 with only about 1,800 cartridge models created in that time. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Gutta percha appears to be all completely solid & intact with the aforementioned repair to the handle. There is some light fading toward the tip, possibly caused by a chemical solution with one streak further up the shaft. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-36935 JR353 (4,500-6,500)
