SCARCE ENGRAVED & INSCRIBED REMINGTON NO. 2 ROLLING BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE. SN 24. Cal. 32 RF. Fine sporting rifle with 26″ oct bbl, gold washed Beech’s front sight with broken exposed post and fixed rear sight with a special Remington ladder rear sight mounted over the chamber area. Bbl is engraved in period foliate arabesque & geometric patterns with snake & dot patterns from the receiver to about 13-1/2″ over the top flat and about 7-1/2″ over top side flats and about 3-3/4″ over the side flats. The area between the ladder and fixed rear sights is engraved with a foliate & floral pattern. Forward of rear sight is engraved in period script “C.S. Kingsland”. Top tang has the usual 2-line Remington name & address and patent dates. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with long slim forearm that has a schnable metal tip and straight stock with raised side panels and a smooth steel Remington buttplate. SN was observed on bottom tang, bottom flat of bbl under forearm, rear face of the forearm trunion and inside buttplate. No number was observed on buttstock however there is no doubt that this is the orig buttstock for this rifle. Left side of the top & bottom tangs have the number “230”, probably an assembly number. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only a few thousand of these little rifles were produced in the period 1873 to about 1910. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 88-90% strong orig blue with the loss areas from chemical spotting, probably from some caustic bore cleaner. Frame retains most of its orig faded case colors, slightly stronger in sheltered areas. Top & bottom tangs and trigger guard along with buttplate retain smoky case colors. Breech block & hammer retain about 50% orig bright blue with chemical staining and the trigger most of its thin orig blue. Wood is sound with light handling & storage marks with buttstock retaining most of its orig factory varnish and the forearm about 50% orig varnish with balance a hand worn patina.
