FINE DILPP WHEELOCK RIFLE. NSN. 58 Cal. 33-3/8” swamped oct bbl with “JO. CASPER. DILPP IN. STAIN” inlaid in gold on top of the bbl. The lock is engraved with three dogs attacking a bear while a hunter is shooting at the bear. The cock is engraved with a swan floating in a castle moat. The cocks ring cover is engraved in a shell pattern. All of the mounts are gilt bronze. The triggerguard has a relief carved figure of a seated Diana with her bow and dog on the finial with extensive floral carving on the bow and dbl set trigger plate. The counterplate has sculpted engraving of a hunting party involving a deer, two dogs, two hunters with wheelocks and numerous animals in a forest in front of a castle. The patchbox cover has a raised bust of a woman at the rear and a castle in a forest at the front. The buttplate is engraved with two deer. The tailpipe has a man carrying a gun. The other ramrod pipes are simply engraved. The forearm tip, ramrod tip and cheekpiece are covered with ivory. The blackened wood stock is relief carved with floral scrolls. The release button for the sliding patchbox is above the woman’s head. There is a grip safety on the left side of the forearm. It must be pressed to release the sear bar. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina on the lock and bbl with scattered light surface rust and pitting. About 85% of the gilt remains. Stock has numerous cracks, most of which are still solid. Some chips on the edges of the patchbox cover. A very attractive display item. This is the second mounting of this lock on a gun as there are two sets of lockplate screw holes.
