Fine sporting rifle with 26″ oct bbl, globe front sight, Lawrence Patent ladder rear sight and a Sharps style tang sight with 3-1/2″ staff made by Axtell with an “A” inside a shield on bottom side. It is mounted with straight grain American walnut with rnd checkered forearm that has fancy pewter tip. SN was observed in the usual place on top tang, bottom of bbl, inside forearm bbl channel, front face of buttstock, lockplate, trigger plate & inside the toe of the buttplate. According to Sharps Firearms, Sellers, only 2,120 of these fine rifles were produced at the Hartford plant in the period Jan. 1871 to Sept. 1880. Apparently the added checkered horn pistol grips were not uncommon on the Sharps sporting rifles as they are mentioned in the referenced publication. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching except rear sight, as noted. Bbl retains 97-98% strong orig factory blue with only faint sharp edge wear. Receiver, breech block, lockplate & hammer retain most of their orig factory case colors, moderately faded with brighter colors on left side, turned more silver on right side. Lever retains case colors in sheltered areas having turned dark on outer surfaces. Buttplate retains smoky case colors being mostly a dark gray patina. Wood is sound with light nicks & scratches and a small bruise on forearm and overall retains most of its orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40124 JR209 (13,000-18,000)
