SAMUEL ADDISON SHUTE (American, 1803-1836) AND RUTH WHITTIER SHUTE (American, 1803-1882) PORTRAIT OF YOUNG GIRL WITH DOG. First third 19th century, New England. Extremely rare watercolor, gouache and pencil full portrait of a young girl with blond hair and blue eyes holding a whip in her left hand with her pet dog jumping up for attention. The girl is dressed in a fashionable pink dress, embellished with large white X-stitched buttons, with puffed sleeves and ivory pantaloons, and with brown laced shoes. She is standing beneath a large shade tree which is located to her left. Samuel and Ruth Shute, married in 1827, were prolific and collaborative portrait painters. They settled in Weare, New Hampshire, but traveled widely to paint portraits. They would advertise in local papers that they were available for portrait painting and stay as long as the commissions lasted. The earliest signed portraits by both of them were for the Atkinson Family of Lowell, Massachusetts and are dated 1831. “The Shutes’ work can be divided into two periods. Little is known about the first period (1827-1831), except that the two artists generally worked separately… They eventually developed an unusual style, both working on the same piece of art… This collaboration marked the second period and dates from sometime in 1831 until mid 1833.” “It is thought that he [Samuel] was ill for several years prior to his death, as paintings dated after 1834 appear to have been done only by Ruth.” Excerpted from Folk Art: Nineteenth Century Lowell, An Exhibit by Martha Mayo at the University of Lowell Center for Lowell History. Important similarities between various works of Samuel & Ruth Shute include 1) the striations in the background of various portraits, notably those of Cynthia Bicknell Atkinson, James V. Atkinson and Frederick Buxton; 2) the incorporation of a pet dog, notably those of Two Children from the Prescott Family and Frederick Buxton; 3) eyes having large irises and prominent pupils, notably those of the Atkinson Family, Frederick Buxton, the Prescott Children and Atlantis Orr; 4) use of crosshatched buttons, notably those of Frederick Buxton and Portrait of Young Boy with Dark Hair. Housed in a contemporary frame and has been archivally mounted on acid-free board with a UV plexiglass front and spacers in between. Lot accompanied by photograph of reverse prior to framing. SIZE: Sight 21-1/2″ x 16-1/2″. CONDITION: Restoration to proper left forearm. Small tears on the margins that have patches in the rear. Small discolored spots across the subject’s forehead, beneath her proper left eye and at the center of her right cheek.
