FINE EARLY EAGLE HEAD AMERICAN SWORD WITH ORIGINAL BELT & BUCKLE. Fine American sword of the 1810-1820 period with 28″ curved blade 1-3/8″ at the ricasso. Blade has sgl fuller and etched blade with foliate patterns and a trophy of arms with liberty cap on left side and foliate patterns on right side with 20 stars. It has brass, eagle-head pommel with sgl D-shaped handguard and round quillion with ribbed bone handle and brass ferrule. Accompanied by its orig leather scabbard with brass hangers, missing the tip. Also accompanied by an important buff colored leather sword belt with spread-winged eagle and trophy of arms buckle that has 13 stars in an arc over the top and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on a ribbon between the wings. Belt is of light, buff-colored leather, about 30″ long x 2-1/2″ wide with its orig buckle tab and sword straps. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is bright with no nicks and light scattered spots of rust with most of the etched patterns visible. Scabbard is dry & crackled but intact. Belt is dry & fragile but also intact; buckle is nicked & dinged with a blackish brass patina. 9-24227 (800-1,200)
