RARE EARLY AMERICAN SILVER HILT SWORD WITH SILVER SPOON BY JONATHAN OTIS. Fine mid-18th century American straight sword with 30-7/8″ single edged straight blade with wide unstopped fuller. Blade is unmarked although it may have had a name scratched out from the spine. Handle material is wood wrapped with silver wire and silver backstrap with silver ferrule and flat silver pommel cap with round silver knob on pommel cap. It has a stirrup knuckle guard with flat sided round quillion that has a very old forged repair. Accompanied by its orig silver-mounted brown leather scabbard with hangers. Sword handguard is marked with the Otis touch mark on the face of the quillion side. Also accompanied by a late 18th century silver spoon with applied handle that has the full “OTIS” touch mark on the back and the hand engraved initials “SB” that have a star in the middle. Jonathan Otis was an American silversmith in Sandwich, Massachusetts & Middletown, Connecticut and for a period also worked in Newport, Rhode Island in the 1750s. He died Feb. 1791. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Blade is sound with some light discoloration and a few spots of pitting with a few minor nicks on the blade; handle has a couple of chips in the wood with hairlines on each side. Wire wrapping is intact although slightly loose; handguard, backstrap & pommel cap are fine; scabbard is lightly flexed and retains most of its orig brown finish; drag shows light wear. Spoon shows heavy wear on left side of tip. 9-24226 (20,000-30,000)
