W. GARDNER FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 54 Smoothbore. New York style Kentucky rifle with 42″ oct bbl, brass front sight and fixed rear sight. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with three keys through German silver escutcheons. It has brass furniture with three guides containing its orig brass tipped hickory ramrod and a small saddle plate on bottom with German silver hunter stars on each side of forestock. Top flat of bbl is marked “W. GARDNER – GENEVA”. Left side flat has a beveled edge, J-shaped brass sideplate and it has sgl trigger. Buttstock has a 4-pc patchbox in the right side and crescent buttplate with long toeplate. Left side of buttstock has a shallow cheekpiece inlaid with a spread-winged eagle and a small plate below with three pierced, heart-shaped cutouts. Each side of wrist is inlaid with a crescent moon having a human face. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good to fine. The iron parts retain a dark attic patina; stock has a repaired right side flat with a crack in the toe; there is another crack by the bbl channel on right side, otherwise wood is sound showing moderate to heavy wear.
