UNSIGNED (American, Mid 19th century) TITLED PORTRAIT OF THE SEAMSTRESS “PHEBE WALTERS”. Oil on canvas half portrait of a woman seated in a writing arm Windsor chair holding a tatting card decorated with flowers and in the other hand a thimble is at the end of one of her fingers. She wears a ribbon with needlework flowers, presumably some of her work, around her neck. She wears a flower decorated lace bonnet along with a lace top. On reverse of canvas are some old notes identifying the sitter and the family, “Phebe Walters, married Titus Ketchum”, “sister to Ruth Walters”, and “Ruth married James Valentine Sr.” Housed in original gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 30″ x 25″. CONDITION: Open tack holes all around the stretcher, craquelure, surface dirt and some minor chipping. In need of some restoration. 9-26482 (800-1,200)
