COMMODORE WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE LETTERS. All but five in the hand of Bainbridge spanning the period of this and his crew’s imprisonment by the Bashaw of Tripoli. Letters are dated January 14, 1804 through June 11, 1805. A most fascinating group of letters describing his captivity and its privations along with advice to Tobias Lear regarding the strengths and vulnerabilities of his captors. Along with a cordial personal letter of 1813 to Lear. In a letter dated February 8, 1804 Bainbridge gives a vivid description of the battle resulting in the capture of his ship “Philadelphia” and crew. CONDITION: Very good. 9-97927 (3,000-5,000)
