IMPORTANT ALFRED STAHLI CARVED WALNUT BLACK FOREST EAGLE. First quarter 20th century, Swiss. Carved by Alfred Stahli (1893-1972) Brienz, Switzerland. This extremely fine example, intricately carved from the solid, depicts a large eagle with outspread wings clutching its prey, a small mountain goat, in its talons on a rocky outcrop raised on an oval plinth. Alfred Stahli and his brother, Hans, were accomplished Swiss carvers who retailed several of their works through Ed. Binder & Co. Alfred was best known for his accomplishments with eagle carvings. SIZE: 20″ overall h. x 15-1/2″ w. x 7″ d. PROVENANCE: Purchased at an estate sale on Nantucket in 1976 of a retired US Army Colonel who served in WWII in Europe. The eagle was a prized souvenir of the Colonel because it was retrieved by him and his troops when Adolph Hitler’s Eagles Nest Retreat was captured in April of 1945 in the Bavarian Alps. Authenticated as having been carved by Alfred Stahli by Wayne Barton, Director of the Alpine School of Woodcarving in April 2006 and Michael Daniels, one of the authors of Swiss Carvings The Art of the ‘Black Forest’ 1820-1940. CONDITION: Extremely fine original condition, showing good color and patina. 9-99730 (12,000-15,000)
