RARE AMERICAN TRADE SIGN. Last quarter 19th century, probably New York. Large and finely detailed example of a carved Quanyin Buddha figure, with hands in mudra position. Believed to be a tea shop trade figure for window display. Carved in white pine with original polychrome paint decoration. Probably intended to display a case of tea in his lap. Recently discovered in a Hudson River Valley, NY home. Reference: Treasury of American Design by Clarence P. Hornung, Vol 1, page 66, figure 173-176. SIZE: 38-1/2″ h x 25″ w x 23″ d. CONDITION: Structurally very good with minor paint loss and with old small age splits. One fingertip with restoration, otherwise very good, untouched condition. 9-24150 (10,000-20,000)
