SOLON FRANCIS MONTECELLO BADGER (American, 1873-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “MONHEGAN”. Fine oil on canvas ship portrait of the black-hulled, four-masted “Monhegan”. It is shown sailing right to left with sails full and four men on deck. The name emblazoned on the bow, stern and pennant off the back mast. An American flag flies at the back and a ship has, off its bow, an area of low land with a lighthouse. House in its original gesso-decorated wood frame with gilt liner. On reverse is a Monhegan Historical and Cultural Museum label. Bath Daily Times of March 19, 1902 reads “The four-masted schooner Monhegan, hailing from Bath, Maine, bound from Havana to Delaware Break-water with 10,000 bags of sugar, is a total wreck on Molasses reef, Florida coast. Capt. J. W. Murphy with his wife and crew were landed at Key West Tuesday by the steamer Olivette which arrived from Port Tampa. The Monhegan was owned by Captain Murphy and C. W.and H.F. Morse of New York. She was built in Rockland and bore the name of Lena F. Dixon until she went ashore a few years ago on Monhegan and was purchased by the Morses and rebuilt and her name changed to Monhegan.” SIZE: 22″ x 36″. CONDITION: Relined, craquelure. Two photographs are attached to the back before relining, one showing a date of “1892” on original canvas. All over scattered touch up with inpainting, otherwise very good. 9-20330 (15,000-25,000)
