RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 DELUXE EXPRESS LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 29756. Cal. 50EX (50-95), 26″ oct to rnd bbl with half magazine, ivory bead front sight, checkered side V-notch sporting rear. Top flat of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860”. Adjacent receiver “50-CAL”. Standard receiver with dust cover marked “WINCHESTER EXPRESS / 50 CAL 95 GRS”. Top tang accompanied with tang peep sight. Mounted in “XXX” walnut, checkered pistol grip, fleur-de-lis ebony inlay in grip cap, smooth steel shotgun butt, H-checkered fancy forend with nose cap. Accompanied with Cody Firearms Museum Winchester letter identifying as Express, case-hardened rifle, half octagon, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip, shotgun butt. Received in warehouse November 3, 1882. Shipped on November 8, 1882 on order number 434. There is also a Cody Museum fact sheet dated 6-24-94 to Eldon Owens identifying as above and including half magazine. Inspection of lower tang finds assembly number “XXX427S”. The “427” can also be found in top tang channel of stock. Inside toe buttplate is stamped “39”. CONDITION: Good to Very Good. Bbl retains a mottled silver and brown patina showing traces of blue in the most protected areas. There are a few normal, minor nicks & scratches. Receiver and side plates retain a mottled silver hardening and gray patina with some normal minor nicks & scratches. Dust cover retains orig blue that is blending with brown to purple patina. Stock is sound with slightly worn checkering, numerous minor nicks, dings & small scratches retaining much of its orig piano varnish finish blending with hand-worn patina. Forend is sound with slightly worn checkering, normal nicks, dings & small scratches with hand-worn patina blending with orig piano varnish. Dust cover does not always fully retract, otherwise mechanics are crisp. Shiny bore with some light frosting in grooves. 4-40719 BDT226 (15,000-25,000)
