RARE & IMPORTANT MASSACHUSETTS CHIPPENDALE CHERRY TALL CASE CLOCK “WM. CRAWFORD”. Last quarter 18th century. This fine diminutive example, painted on the dial in script Wm. Crawford, the hood with molded swan’s neck pediment with carved pinwheel terminals centering three brass spire finials, the centermost on a molded keystone extending through the molded arch above the glazed thumbmolded tombstone door opening to a conforming painted enameled dial. Painted in the arch with a mountainous lake scene within an oval bordered by gilt scrolling vinery above an Arabic and Roman numeral chapter ring further centering a sweep seconds dial above the maker’s name. Time and strike apertures center a calendar dial, the dial further decorated with spandrels featuring portraits of female figures. At base of the face is “D. RICE, WORCESTER”, presumed to be the identity of the artist. Bonnet door is flanked by freestanding fluted colonnettes with brass capitals and bases. Case with concave molded cornice fitted with a double arched thumbmolded door above a concave and bolection molded box base, raised on molded bracket feet. REFERENCES: William Crawford (b. 1745, d. 1833), clockmaker in Oakham, Massachusetts, and also active in the Revolutionary War. PROVENANCE: Clock was acquired from a family in central Maine and consigned by the current owner. CONDITION: Brass movement recently cleaned, hands appear original. Painted dial original with minor rubbing losses at proper right side of dial. Case intact with cleaned old finish. Spire and ball finials appear original, with slightly nipped spire tips.
