FIJIAN WHALE’S TOOTH “TABUA”. First half 19th century, island of Fiji. In modern frame. A sperm whale’s tooth, mounted and hung from a braided cord traditionally of coir sinnet. This traditional form of necklace was considered an heirloom within the family of the owner. This lot is accompanied by a Hearst Gallery catalog and additional document describing these tabuas.
