OUTSTANDING FRENCH LOUIS XVI HAND CHASED SOLID SILVER JEWELRY CASKET. This outstanding box with French hallmarks on base indicating the Paris Charge Mark for either 1768-74 or 1780-91 and two other hallmarks which are unidentifiable. Cover having opposing medallions of what appears to be Louis XV and Louis XVI, having a spread winged eagle above and crossed arrows and drum below, with a garland of flowers through center. Corners have relief rams heads leading to hoofed feet. The ends with oval medallions surrounded by flower garlands and torches. The front and back with ribbon topped columns, garland of flowers and central oval unmonogrammed area. Original key is present. We believe this to be a commemorative box for the transition of Louis XV to Louis XVI. Accompanying the box is a 1908 receipt from John Fenning Antiques, New York City. Weight: 23.6 troy ounces.
