OUTSTANDING CONRAD ULRICH ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 66 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 84012. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Wonderful engraved ’66 with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, with threaded magazine plug, half nickel front sight and 900 yard Henry ladder rear sight. Top flat has sharp, completely legible Winchester & King’s Patent markings. Mounted with 2-3X center crotch, flame grain uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & crescent brass buttplate. Forend cap has dimpled front edges and an integral sling loop with corresponding loop in buttstock. Trigger is the thin pointed type occasionally found on deluxe & high grade 1866s. Receiver is wonderfully engraved by Conrad Ulrich with about 70% coverage very artistic, intertwined foliate arabesque patterns on both sides with the left side having a large open panel and two eagle’s heads incorporated into the engraving patterns at the front edge of the side plate. Front recessed area is engraved with a small raebuck head vignette with Indian pattern borders on top & bottom edge. Left side also incorporates fleur-de-lis at the front & rear edges and top & bottom edges of the open panel, along with mirror image fleur-de-lis at the rear end. One of the scrolls terminates in a large flower blossom and the lever screw hole is surrounded by an engraved sunburst. Right side is engraved almost identically with the large panel in the center engraved with a shorthair pointer on point in a field scene and the front panel in the recessed area engraved with the head of a cougar. The lever screw hole on the right side is surrounded by a shell pattern. Top of receiver is wonderfully engraved to match with engraving patterns down rear edges of the receiver and on top & bottom tangs. Bottom of receiver is engraved with mirror image geometric patterns on the frame and bottom of the carrier. Front & rear edges of frame have nicely scalloped borders. Buttplate tang & forend cap are beautifully engraved to match the receiver. All of the engraving has a wonderful, extremely fine punch dot background and all of brass is gold plated. SN is on the bottom tang and is preceded by a small “B”. SN is also found in top tang channel of the buttstock and inside toe of the buttplate. Additionally the assembly number “58” is found on left side of lower tang under the wood and inside toe of buttplate. No further disassembly was effected to check for additional matching numbers. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine, all matching. Bbl & magazine tube retain most of their strong, bright, orig factory blue with sharp edge wear and some light surface etching on the bbl. Magazine band retains most of its orig bright factory blue. Receiver retains about 50-60% strong orig gold plating with exposed brass a dark mustard patina. Forend cap retains virtually all of its orig gold plating and buttplate 30-40% gold plating. Lever is a dark brown patina with traces of silvered case colors. Hammer retains dark case colors. Wood is sound with usual light handling & use nicks & scratches and retains virtually all of its wonderful piano varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with some scattered orange peel roughness. 4-36882 JR335 (50,000-100,000)
