RARE FOLK ART CARVED WHALE WEATHERVANE. Late 19th Century, American. This large and whimsical example of a “Nantucket Sleigh Ride” depicting a carved oak sperm whale with open mouth and pronounced tail joined by a metal rod to a small whale boat, carved in pine, within which is depicted six human figures. Weathervane is offered together with its compliment of directionals. Accompanying weathervane is a photograph of it in its original location in Princeton, NJ. SIZE: Weathervane is 11″ h x 61″ l. Overall 48″ h. PROVENANCE: By descent through the family. The weathervane remained atop one of the barns on the property in Princeton, New Jersey until the time of its removal in the early 1980s. Subsequently the family relocated to Maine and has displayed the weathervane within the home preventing any additional harmful effects of weathering. The additional whale folk art carving offered in this session was found in the family barn. CONDITION: With overall nicely weathered surfaces having very good patina, structurally very good. Any losses or alterations due to weathering have resulted in an overall pleasing affect. Figure at the bow of the dory has been reattached as well as a small chip at the stern. The two copper ornamental spheres on the directionals with verdigris patina; both with some denting. 9-20445 (6,000-9,000)
