EXTRAORDINARILY RARE VOLCANIC PISTOL CARBINE. SN 50. Cal. 41. Very rare pistol/carbine with 16-1/2″ oct bbl with integral magazine tube, pinched blade front sight and carbine rear sight on the frame with elevation adjusting wheel. Bbl address is three lines “THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN FEB 14 1854”. The address is a light strike and difficult to read but is mostly all legible. Mounted with smooth 2-pc walnut grips numbered to this carbine. Accompanied by an orig pistol carbine stock that attaches to the back strap at the butt with a small attaching iron that is retained with a thumb screw through the butt strap. Stock is nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with a silver plated brass crescent buttplate that has a faceted top tang. SN was observed on left side of butt strap under the grip, on lever and inside both side plates and on bottom of frame just behind the carrier opening. SN of the buttstock iron is “20” and is found on left side under the wood. Stock & buttplate are unnumbered however the buttplate screws are numbered “20”. The thumb screw through the butt strap appears to be bent and probably fragile with plier marks on the outer edges so no attempt was made to remove it for fear of breaking it. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms, “Quantity unknown; extremely limited; very rare.” PROVENANCE: Eldon Owen Estate Collection; David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine, all matching except stock as noted, rotating sleeve was not removed to check for matching numbers. Bbl & magazine tube are a smooth, even plum patina with traces of blue in the rib. Frame & side plates are a smooth dark coffee colored brass patina. Left grip has a repaired crack and right grip has a hairline through the escutcheon hole and a chip at the frame. Overall they retain 75-80% orig varnish showing moderate wear. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with scattered light pitting. Bottom of carrier is slightly battered. Stock is sound with light nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig factory varnish. Buttplate retains 60-70% orig silver with exposed brass a medium patina. 4-36887 JR308 (30,000-40,000)
