GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM (American, 1811-1879) WESTERN LANDSCAPE. Outstanding recent rediscovery oil on canvas panoramic landscape showing what is believed to be Pike’s Peak in the background. Foreground having a group of people led by a Native American with spear and shield. There are ten figures in all and they stand next to the river on a grassy bank dotted with large trees. A large tree is on the right side with colorful ground cover at bottom near the water. Light cascades in from the left lighting the mountain in a rose glow. Signed lower right “G C Bingham 71″. An outstanding example of this American artist. Housed in a fine decorated gilt wood replacement frame. REFERENCE: Smithsonian Inventory of Art, Control Number IAP 71930309. SIZE: 34-1/2″ x 27-1/4”.
