REMINGTON SPLIT BREECH CARBINE. Cal. 46. SN 3376.. End of Civil War contract carbine. It has 20” rnd bbl, one bbl band, casehardened frame, sling ring & bar on left side of frame. Metal buttplate, standard flip up sight. It has nicely figured stock with two crisp cartouches and a “P” proof with other inspector initials on various parts. Hard to find carbine since most were shipped to France after the Civil War. This carbine was on display at Remington Museum in Ilion, NY in 2005. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains most of a restored blue with some light pitting near the muzzle. Receiver retains most of its orig case colors, faded and turning dark. Stock has a repaired crack in the left side of the wrist and the forearm is missing a few small chips by the bbl channel, otherwise wood is sound and retains a light, wiped-on finish. Hammer does not retract completely to the full cock position to allow breech block to rotate and must be held against the spring before it can be retracted. Otherwise, mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore with some fine pitting, and a couple spots of deeper pitting. 4-59366 JH11 (2,500-3,500)
