SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1817 FLINTLOCK PISTOL. Cal. 70. NSN. 11” rnd bbl. Lockplate marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1815” at tail, with eagle/“US” at front. Rear of bbl is dated 1818. Standard proof marks are on upper left side at rear of bbl. Hickory cleaning rod has an iron fitting at rear. This is the second type with reinforced neck hammer. Interior of lock has script “M” maker’s initial with “T” assembly marks on some parts. No visible assembly marks on external pieces. Pan and bbl show signs of welding. Front lockplate screw does not quite line up with hole in lockplate. 1815-dated lockplates are thought to have come from an uncompleted experimental rifle proposed by Springfield in that year. CONDITION: Metal surfaces have been cleaned but moderate to heavy pitting remains overall. Stock has been broken through lock, repaired, and refinished with severe stains around the metal parts.
