RARE REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK BLACK HILLS RIFLE/SHOTGUN. Cal. 45-60. SN 7712. These rare rifles were produced by Remington as a low cost sporting rifle. The advertisement in their catalogue states “Designed for Hunters and Sportsmen generally, when requiring a well made, reliable gun at a moderate price. Using cheap, but strictly first-class ammunition.” This gun is described as having 28” tapered rnd bbl, German silver, pin front sight on a dovetail with a shotgun type, fixed rear sight. It has maker’s name & address near receiver. It is now smoothbore, apparently having been made into a shotgun. The consignor believes this gun was a prototype shotgun made in the Remimgton factory and never marketed since no 45-60 shot shell ammo was ever produced. A 45-60 cartridge will chamber. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain, American walnut with tapered forearm & straight stock with semi-crescent buttplate. Accompanied by one extremely rare, orig, Remington cartridge for this rifle. Consignor states that he paid $370 for this cartridge several years ago and in all of his years of collecting is the only shotgun example he has ever encountered. Also accompanying are two chamber casts, another shorter 45-60 cartridge and a 45-60 Peabody cartridge, all of which are similar and will chamber in this rifle. Remington cartridge was apparently a dud and was drilled to make a dummy. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bore opened up as noted. Bbl retains 60-70% orig blue with balance a mottled patina. Receiver retains traces of case colors in sheltered areas with moderate pitting. Wood is sound with oil staining on forearm & stock around receiver & tangs and retains a hand-worn patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-59437 JR388 (1,600-2,500)
