*RARE J.P. SAUER EXHIBITION GRADE DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 115406. Beautiful, seldom seen, dbl with 30″ bbls choked FULL/IMP-CYL with raised tapered matted rib, dbl ivory beads, the middle bead broken. The rib is hand matted with the maker’s name near the chamber end. This shotgun was apparently made for the American or English market as the bbl markings are in English. It has dbl scalloped box lock receiver with side clips and scalloped fences with ejectors and dbl triggers, the front of which is articulated. The wood is beautiful marble cake honey & chocolate French walnut with full checkered splinter forearm and straight grip 14-5/8″ over an old Jostam red waffle pad. It has fine checkered side panels. The receiver, trigger guard, opening lever and 2-1/4″ over the chamber areas and about 1/2″ at the muzzles are elaborately deep relief engraved in Germanic style with patterns of oak leaves and acorns. The left side of the receiver has four very fine detailed raised gold Auerhaun with very delicate trees and branches in the background. The right side has four very nicely detailed raised gold ducks with a very fine detailed marsh scene in the background. The floorplate has two large raised gold bird dogs executed in great detail. The trigger guard has large raised gold intertwined “SS” and “SAFE” is inlaid in gold on the top tang. The long lower tang and opening lever are engraved in matching patterns with the opening lever pad filigree cut. All the engraving has a fine stippled background. Weight 7 lbs. 12 oz. Drop at the heel 2-1/4″, at the comb 1-5/8″ with slight cast off. CONDITION: Very fine, the bbls retain 95-96% strong original blue with a few scattered spots of surface spotting. The receiver, trigger guard and forend iron retain generous amounts of original finish with the gold animals showing light wear. The wood is sound with scattered light handling and use marks and retains most of its original oil finish. The pad is worn and near collapsed with its broken backing plate. Mechanics are crisp with brilliant shiny bores. 4-53325 JR758 (15,000-25,000)
