*JAMES WOODWARD & SONS SIDELOCK OVER/UNDER SHOTGUN. Cal. 16 ga. SN 6803. Scarce & beautiful shotgun with 24” superposed bbls choked IMP-CYL/CYL with flat, hand serrated, tapered rib with sgl bead, ejectors & dbl triggers. Bottom flat of bbls is marked with 1 oz. proofs with orig 2-1/2” chambers that were opened to 2-3/4”, apparently by the factory, as it also has “2-3/4” marking. Right side of top bbl is also marked “2-3/4”, apparently a re-proof. Left side of top bbl has maker’s name & address. Mounted in very highly figured, streaky, French or Circassian walnut with checkered, beavertail forearm & Prince of Wales stock, 14-3/4” over a leather covered pad. Grip cap is hard rubber and it has a gold initial plate engraved with a griffin. Receiver & lockplates are beautifully engraved with fine English rose & scroll patterns with maker’s name & scrolls on each lockplate. Lockplates have gold line cocked indicators. Fences are deeply sculpted and the top tang has “SAFE” in gold. Bottom of receiver is marked “WOODWARD’S / PATENT / OVER & UNDER”. Bore diameter: top – .667, bottom – .666. Bore restrictions: top – .005, bottom – .008. Wall thickness: top – .025, bottom – .025. Drop at heel: 2-1/2”, drop at comb: 1-7/16”. Weight: 6 lbs. 4.16 oz. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain about 95% strong orig blue. Left lockplate retains 75-80% faded case colors & right 40-50%. Receiver retains bright case colors in very sheltered areas, being predominately silvered patina. Stock has a repaired crack through wrist with a crack at tip of forearm, otherwise wood is sound with normal handling & use marks showing moderate wear & retaining most of a professionally restored finish.
