EXTREMELY RARE SPIW PROTOTYPE BAYONET. Made for a military program experimental “special purpose individual weapon”. The idea of program was to provide individual infantry soldier an all around weapon with select fire capability & grenade launcher. The construction of the unit was such that an ordinary bayonet would either block the sights, the grenade launcher or both. Therefore the experimentation with offset bayonets. This bayonet incorporates the blade & handle from a Type I M4 bayonet with stacked leather handle without spacers and a 6-3/4” blade with 3-1/2” of back grind mounted parallel with a 3-5/8” handguard beneath flash hider ring. It is completely unmarked. Accompanied by an orig M8A1 canvas & fiberglass sheath with metal tip & shoestring thong. See The SPIW The Deadliest Weapon that Never Was, Stevens & Ezell. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. Does not appear to have ever been mounted & certainly never on a weapon when it was fired. Retains virtually all of its gray/green parkerizing on blade and black oxide finish to custom offset handguard. Leather handle is equally new. 4-56729 JR467 (2,000-3,000)
