FACTORY ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION CARBINE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 61217. Beautiful Ulrich engraved carbine with 20″ bbl, full magazine tube, integral front band and sight with early style 2-position flip rear sight. The wood is nicely figured American walnut with straight grip and carbine buttplate with trap containing an unusual small diameter hickory and iron 3-section cleaning rods. The stock & forearm band have factory sling swivels. The receiver, top & bottom tangs and buttplate tang are beautifully engraved in typical Ulrich style with full coverage on both sides and extensive engraving over the top of the receiver, top tang and buttplate tang. The bottom of the receiver has mirror image patterns on the carrier and between the timing spring screws. The left side engraving consists of wonderful intertwined foliate floral and arabesque patterns with a large blank rectangle on the sideplate and a typical Ulrich design on the front flat. The right side has a mirror image pattern on the front flat with the right side of the receiver and sideplate matching engraved from the left side with a beautiful 4-point pattern in the center that consists of connected horseshoe shaped patterns overlaid with a rounded end cross-like design with four fleur-de-lis in the recesses. All the patterns are surrounded with fine border designs and have punch dot background. The bottom tang is also lightly engraved and bears the microscopic “C.F. Ulrich” stamp just below the serial number. CONDITION: Bbl and magazine tube retain an even dark blue/plum patina with a few nicks on the bbl and a small area of rust at the tip of the forearm on the magazine tube. Receiver retains 85-90% strong bright original nickel with some minor flaking mostly on the left side and bottom edges. Lever retains about 50% original nickel and the hammer about 80%. Buttplate retains about 60% dull original nickel. Wood is sound with nice wood to metal fit. Wood has been professionally restored. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with some good shine and scattered moderate pitting. 4-53408 JR766 (27,500-37,500)
