UNUSUAL REMINGTON WHITMORE MODEL 1874 DAMASCUS DOUBLE BARREL HAMMER SHOTGUN. SN 860. 10 ga. 30” ribbed bbls. Marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N. Y.” inside an engraved box on top of the bbl rib, and “A E.WHITMORE.’S / PATENTS / AUG. 8. 1871 / APR.16.1872” on the top locking bar. Various letters and numbers appear on the water table and bottom of the bbls. There is no number to indicate the grade, but the extra engraving on the hammer, action, bbls and buttplate indicate that it could be a grade 3. The factory letter does not give any information on this gun. The straight grip walnut stock is checkered and has a slight tiger stripe grain. This gun was pictured in The Guns of Remington by Howard Madaus, p. 252. CONDITION: Traces of brown remain on the Damascus pattern and some of the casehardening pattern, but no color. Stock is very good with few nicks and dents. Mechanically fine. 4-59419 FS665 (1,250-1,750)
