AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE BELLE EPOQUE CHELSEA CAST DORE BRONZE SHELF CLOCK. RETAILED BY EDWARD F. CALDWELL AND CO., N.Y. First quarter 20th Century. The enamel dial with roman numerals centering a bronze rondel cast with cherubs, the time aperture within an octagonal dore bronze case surmounted by a draped urn all cast with anthemion leaves and floral garlands raised on a C-scrolled base cast with a scallop shell on a rectangular molded plinth cast with scrolls and anthemion leaves, engraved on the lower edge in script “E.F. Caldwell & Co. Inc. New York”. Raised on cast turned feet.The backplate also engraved with the name of the retail company above a small faint hand inscription “JA-12-23 X-186″(January 12, 1923. Item 186?).The backplate centered by a cast rosette enclosing an aperture for regulating speed of clock.The brass works within, stamped “Chelsea Clock Co. Boston, USA ” also engraved with the serial number “102363”. SIZE: 13 1/2″ h X 7″ X 3 3/4″. PROVENANCE: While little is known of the specific history of this clock we can determine the age of the Chelsea works as being manufactured between 1915 and 1919. A clock with nearly identical case is illustrated on the Chelsea Clock Company web site. Edward F Caldwell & Co. was founded in 1895 and renowned for its high quality metalwork. The company specialized in manufacturing lighting fixtures, clocks and desk accessories. The firm was dissolved in the early 1930s.
