WILLIAM JACOB HAYS SR. (American, 1830-1875)) “POINTER AND QUAIL, A GOOD RETRIEVE”. Oval oil on canvas sporting scene shows a white and brown dog from the shoulders up holding a recently shot quail in mouth. The background is a field under blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower left lightly which can be seen in strong light. Housed in a gilt wood frame with linen matte having an oval window. The back retaining two Kennedy Galleries labels with painting information. SIZE: 21″ x 17″. CONDITION: Relined with minor inpainting, tight craquelure. Very good. 9-95747 (1,000-1,500)
