LARGE ORIGINAL PEN AND INK CARTOON DRAWING OF UNCLE SAM. This one from 1902 depicting a concerned figure of Uncle Sam reviewing the Congressional record. In the background, Congress is involved in a serious game of poker and smoking stogies. The Congressional record book Uncle Sam is examining documents Congress’ approach to the Panama Canal. One page with an X through it says, “The Canal, Volcanoes Would Fill It”, “Hannah”. The other page, also with an X drawn through it, “The Canal, It Wouldn’t Be Healthy, It Would Breed Mosquitoes”, Hannah. Signed in the lower left, “To Mr. Holland from Homer Davenport, July 1902”. Also signed, “Davenport”. SIZE: 16” x 22”. CONDITION: Small 2” tear in the lower left corner, and a small imperfection in the lower right. Otherwise, generally good. 3-30450 (750-1,250)
