ALTERED 1864 DATED SPRINGFIELD RIFLE/MUSKET. Cal. 58. Bbl is reduced to 30” with the square base front sight/bayonet lug relocated about 1-1/4” from the muzzle. It has 2-leaf musket rear sight, 2- bands with tulip head ramrod commensurately reduced in length. The bbl & lockplate are both dated “1864”. The top of the comb has a rack #37. The left side of the butt is crudely carved “Atlanta / Sep 4 64”. This appears to be one of the field altered pieces. CONDITION: Good to very good. Metal cleaned to bright with scattered light to moderate pitting on the bbl. Wood is sound and retains most of an old sanded refinish. Hammer spring is weak, bore is strong and bright with moderate pitting. 4-51130 JR1051 (500-1,000)
