*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1896 KRAG. Cal. 30. SN 49804. This is an 1896 Krag rifle that has been modified to carbine length. It appears to have a correct carbine stock as there is no provision for a rear swing swivel, but it is also not equipped with a saddle bar. It does have the large bolt cutout for an 1896, so therefore there is a question about the wood. As a 96’, it should have a saddle bar, and there is no question that it is pre 98 wood. But it also cannot be described as a cut down rifle, because there is no repair as to where there was a swing swivel. The bbl has been expertly cut down to carbine length, 20”, although you can see some discoloration where they soldered the sight base on to the bbl. The rear sight is also a rifle sight. CONDITION: Receiver retains approx 50% of its orig finish turning to patina with silvering around the edges. Sideplate also retains approx. 40% of the finish which is also turning to patina. Magazine cover retains approx 85% of a deep blue with some small patches of rust on the handle where you open and close it. Bbl retains about 60% of its blue, thinning, with some slight patches of rust and front 3” of bbl have been touched up after sight was replanted. Bore shows as well-used with pitting present and may clean up to good with a good scrubbing. Buttstock, as described before, is similar to a mod. 99’ with no provision for a saddle bar, although it does have the radius cut out around the bolt area of a 92’, 94’, 96’. Buttstock has never had any provision for swing swivel or saddle bar. There is no cartouche present. Stock is in pretty good condition with some slight dings and mar and fairly sharp finger grooves. The hand guard assembly is “1899” long wood with a hump and is in good condition with a couple very minor dents and no cracks. Mechanics are fine. Overall this is a rather nicely done composite.
