*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1899 KRAG “CONSTABULARY” CARBINE (ASSEMBLED). Cal. 30. SN 227832. Rifle bears a striking resemblance to a Philippine constabulary carbine, but my feeling is that has been an orig 99’ barreled action that had the modifications done and was installed on a (possibly) reproduction stock, or at least a replacement stock. Sights are not carbine as required. Stock does not have “JFC” cartouche as required, and upon taking the metal out of the wood I have come to notice that this particular 99’ Krag Carbine as a carbine by the corrosion to the bottom of the bbl where it was in a carbine stock for an extended period of time. Being that these were made up from 1899 Carbines and were done in the early 1900’s, I don’t feel that this amount of corrosion could have been possible. CONDITION: Receiver retains approx. 75% finish turning plum. Side cover still has very nice mottling which is just beginning to silver. Magazine cover retains some 90% of its color, although turning plum. Bolt assembly has a nice even patina and there is still about 75% nitride blue on the extractor. Bbl assembly, in stock, shows approx. 75% thinning/aged blue with modified muzzle for bayonet. Bore is in fair condition with some pitting toward the muzzle end and gets better as you go back towards the receiver. Bbl bands retain 85% of a bright orig blue. Trigger guard assembly retains approx. 75-80% of the orig blue turning plum around the screws. Buttplate retains about 50% orig blue with some touch-up evident. Buttstock appears near new on the outside and brand new on the inside with just a couple of minor scuffs being evident and very sharp finger grooves. Upper hand guard is the long-wood type commonly used on 98’ rifles and 99’ carbines and is in excellent condition though not matching in age or color with the stock. Mechanically this rifle is sound.
