ALTERED EUROPEAN PERCUSSION MUSKET WITH RAWHIDE SCABBARD. Cal about 65. Musket is an old altered trade musket with the bbl reduced to 19-1/4”. It has a bottom rib and a single iron band and is 34-1/4” overall. On the left flat about 4-1/2” from the back end is stamped in barely legible letters, “USID”. It is presumed that this stands for US Interior Department which was the government agency responsible for Indian affairs. It has a long banana shaped lock with a brass inlay near the front and the butt is stamped in large letters “1E1852”. This appears to be an Indian “blanket rifle”. It is accompanied by a rawhide scabbard 27-1/2” long with buckstitch lacing of more recent manufacture. CONDITION: The musket is poor with the iron having a dark crusty patina with heavy pitting and some burn around the nipple. Stock has several cracks on the left side and losses behind the lock and the toe has an old repair. Mechanics are poor. Scabbard is extremely fine. 4-50659 JR115 (500-1,000)
