WINCHESTER HOTCHKISS SECOND MODEL NAVY RIFLE. Cal. 45/70. SN 4937. 29” rnd bbl. Standard 3-line Winchester marking on left side of receiver. “W.W.K / R / US / anchor / V / P / eagle head / H.N.” at rear of bbl. The Nettleton inspector marks also appear on bolt, bolt handle, extractor, and receiver. “SWP” cartouche at rear of stock is dated “1881”. Like other contract Hotchkiss rifles, these were assembled at Springfield Armory and except for the Hotchkiss action and buttplate had the parts made at Springfield. Only 999 of these were made. CONDITION: Blue/brown patina overall with light surface rust and pitting. Stock has numerous dents and scratches and appears to have been varnished. Edwards Collection 4-58478 (850-1,500)
